Are you Perplexed by What is Going on with Your Body?

Written by

Often people come to see healthcare professionals when their body is exhibiting symptoms that they can no longer tolerate.  Physically, the list of symptoms can be vast- we can experience aches and pains that may be sharp and dull; sensations of gurgling, bloating, griping, tingling, palpitations, numbness, nausea, heart burn; feelings of sadness, anger, frustration, fogginess and…the list goes on. There are a variety of expressions that the body displays.  We want the symptoms to end. Peace and ease, vitality, fully functioning and “get me back to doing what I was doing before this happened” is the preference.  When the body wants us to listen, it makes it clear. It may start as a whisper, and then communicate firmly and then perhaps even yell before we may acknowledge what is going on and then make choices as to how to address the root cause of the matter.

One thing is for sure, the body is trying to get your attention.

In the philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine and other holistic systems of medicine like Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine, symptoms are clues that are valuable indicators of patterns of imbalance.  When we are confused as to what is happening in the body, breathing deeply to become more aware of what is happening helps creates more space around the feeling of uncertainty and disbelief.  From this place the process of healing can begin to happen. Awareness is first and then the next step: looking for patterns of disharmony and harmony.

I believe it is important to look at what is out of harmony and also what is in harmony. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is said that qi flows to where our attention goes.  In Energy healing practices, observation is one of the key modalities. But not just any observation; observation that is based in empowerment is said to create the much desired healing.

The body is a miracle when we take a moment and breathe into the marvel of it. I am constantly in awe with the miracle of the body, and I believe that this place of gratitude is the state from which healing can begin to take place.   How can one find that place of grace when in the middle of experiencing the reality of any given symptom? Its actually much simpler than we think: simple truth- you are alive.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you body. I am grateful for this life.  Taking our awareness away from only the physical symptom into the place where we give thanks is a valuable way to shift perception, observation and awareness.  Then we can come back to the situation, and it looks different.

In any given moment, we are experiencing ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  When I refer to spiritual, I want to clarify that to mean a sense of connection to ourselves, which is greater than what the mind can imagine. The mind is the place of endless thoughts- some of which are useful, and many of which can be detrimental.  Mastery of the mind is important, and a process that requires dedication to wanting to be the best you can be. But it is possible…and definitely worthwhile.

When we are connected to ourselves, it’s a place of no words; the place we enter into when we meditate, go out into nature and then begin to feel connected to the life around us. It is sacred to each individual and in a sense cannot be defined. An attempt to do so only takes away from the sheer awe of the miracle of life. It’s a sense, a knowing and very personal.  I often explain it to patients and students as that space one goes to when they walk into a sacred place that radiates an uplifting energy.  It’s a place of marvel, awe and a sense of unfathomable  mystery.  It must be discovered by each of us individually through our own journey in the precious time we are here.

And as we begin the process of bringing light to our current situation, insight begins to unravel and clarity comes.  As we free ourselves and create more ease in life, more of our energy becomes available for things that we want to create, rather than what we do not want.  By looking within and engaging in a process of understanding what is out of harmony, we come closer to being in harmony.  And as the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together, clarity can emerge and a deep inner knowing of what needs to be created now.   I look forward to sharing more on this process at the upcoming diva date night, where we will delve into the body and seek out the dreams that we are so yearning to create for 2012…lets make it our best year yet!
