A Strange Form of Validation You Want to Embrace and Give Space For

A buzz of uncertainty is flowing throughout my community, which tells me it’s happening everywhere. A young girl recently asked me if it’s possible to be pretending without knowing it. I instantly knew where this was going. To be sure, I responded with a question, “Do you mean like shouting you are happy but feeling deep down that maybe you’re not happy?” Bingo.

When reflecting on all the blessings in our lives, the opportunities, the love – the writing is on the wall… Life is good. Sometimes for what feels like no reason at all, this happiness on the outside turns to a deep unknown and questioning on the inside. Our moods can shift from 100 to 0 very quickly and we feel we’ve lost control. What’s most confusing is that we don’t even know why we aren’t in alignment.

Work can be going splendidly well, we could be head over heels in love with our partner or children, we could be healthy and surrounded by an incredible community. And yet, you think to yourself, “So WHY am I not happier in this moment?!”

The night before this young girl asked me her soul-searching question, I had just finished a live radio interview in front of an audience that came down just to hear what I had to say. I was deeply honored. My immediate community showered me with so much love and validation. I was soaring on a high that was unmatched. I felt my purpose was being fulfilled. I couldn’t have felt better about my life that evening.

As this high continued throughout the night, a strange shift started to occur. Confusion overcame me. I wanted to crawl in a ball and hide. I still felt excited about my progress, but I also started to feel I didn’t want all of the recognition that came with this exposure. I just wanted to continue fulfilling my purpose because it was what I knew I needed to do. Not because I got praise for it. These mixed feelings continued until I realized how normal my emotions really were.

It seemed like a divine moment when the very next morning this young girl, searching, asked me her question about “pretending”. My answer to her was as follows:

“With you sweetie, you have been through so much and I think you are just “grieving” your old self. You ARE happy. You are amazing and everyone loves you. It is perfectly normal to get doubts, have fear at times, cry your eyes out – it doesn’t change your growth and amazing self. You’re just remembering your feelings from the past is all. Perfectly normal.

Think of it too like a dying out of your old self. You could cry about that 5 years from now, or at the peak of your success, or on happy occasions. It’s because when you’ve been in the trenches of life and were willing to drag yourself up – that experience makes you forever grateful for all you had to do to get happy and healthy again. Give space for that grieving or questioning. Allow it to come and pass. Talk to anyone you feel comfortable with if you need a little extra motivation. You’re surrounded by light and “messengers” so I’m not worried at all. Don’t doubt you at any time – there’s just no need. You’ve already proven to yourself that there’s no need for doubt.”

With that response came the most marvelous sense of gratitude. Gratitude for my journey and for hers. Gratitude that I was able to overcome my past and not play a victim my whole life. Gratitude for being aware enough to let go of ego and to just “be” in this moment, with this amazing budding star.

When you have a laser focus to improve your life and self, these moments of sadness or doubt or loneliness come creeping in. Instead of being afraid of what it means, embrace it and give thanks for how far you’ve come in your life – how much you’ve grown. After all, this is just another form of validation you are on the right track.
