“Look hard at the things that cause you pleasure and harder still at the things that cause you pain.”

Why on earth would we want to do that? Let me explain why this quote is one of my favourites and why it inspires me every time I read it.

First of all, looking at the things that cause me pleasure is a great practice. I love to read, dance and spend time outdoors. If my homework is to indulge in those things, well that’s my kind of homework!

But it is not as easy as it sounds, is it? We are busy ladies and it is common for us to leave these pleasurable joys on the backburner. This quote is asking us to do a bit more of what we love. Why? So we can indirectly influence those around us in a positive way. When we are happy, it naturally makes those around us happier too.

The second part of this quote asks us to look even harder at the things that cause us pain. This is the strange one but very beautiful too. How many times do you notice something about yourself that you don’t like? What is your first reaction? Very often the first reaction is to ignore, resist and sweep it under the ‘mental’ rug. It could be a reaction to certain situations, people, things or even our internal dialogue.

By becoming aware of what causes us pain we learn a great deal about ourselves. We learn about belief systems that don’t serve us, we learn how we are still stuck in judgment and fear. Knowing these things empowers us to change our relationship to them which in turn create inner freedom.

Try to enjoy more of what you love and make that a daily priority but remember to also become aware of the challenges you face internally. Shine light on them daily and learn beautiful lessons about how you can live more freely.

I wish I knew the author of this quote but sadly I do not. It anyone else does, I would love to find out so I can quote it properly. How do you feel about learning from your positive and painful experiences? How have you done that so far?

...more about

I am a Wellness Life Coach at the YWCA in Vancouver. I decided to become a Coach after working with one in my twenties. I remember walking into my Coach’s office about 10 years ago feeling confused and overwhelmed. My health was not great, my career objectives were all over the place and I felt completely drained. But within minutes of our session I remember looking at him and thinking “I want what you’ve got”. I left that session feeling inspired, motivated and excited for the possibilities. It has now become my passion and profession to share that gift with everyone I work with. My laser sharp intuition and ability to create a safe space for powerful transformation blows my clients away – no joke. They are always impressed with how quickly and accurately we discover the root cause of their challenges. This skill is something I was born with and have perfected over time. Working with various teachers, professionals, mentors and guides has been my path to understanding and expressing my gifts. As a Life Coach I see all challenges as opportunities in disguise. My approach is very simple – it requires that you are open to see your outside world as a reflection of your inside one and are willing to look within. It’s all about responsibility - if you’ve got that than anything is possible! I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Human Kinetics and Psychology from the University of British Columbia and have received my Life Coach training from Veraxis in 2008. I was certified as an Energy Therapist of Psychosomatic Energetics in 2009.
